Country Overview
Whitewater raft down mighty rivers; go on camel or yak safaris; visit extraordinary archaeological sites; trek in the mountains of the Hindukush; watch cricket. Pakistan is a country of stunning landscapes, hospitable people, and ancient civilisations - it is literally dotted with Hindu temples, Buddhist monuments and Islamic tombs and palaces. In the north, the Chitral Valley is a favourite for mountaineers and wildlife enthusiasts while Taxila and Peshawar offer the Gandhara buildings of early Buddhism. To the east, the Punjab is one of Pakistan's most fertile provinces and boasts Multan, the oldest surviving city in Asia complete with lacelike Mughal architecture, and the colourful artistic centre of Lahore. To the south Moenjodaro presents the most spectacular remains of the Indus Civilisation, dating from 3BC. Meanwhile, the famously spectacular Karakoram Highway winds through the capital Islamabad to China's Xinjiang Province. Pakistan's hostels are well positioned to offer access to many of the country's highlights.Membership
