Country Overview
Swim, windsurf and sail in the Persian Gulf; visit gold markets; buy Bedouin textiles in colourful souks; watch the sun set over sand dunes; eat humus and fuul (piquant bean paste) with Arabic flat bread. A small country, Kuwait has a population of just three million and has transformed itself rapidly. From nomadic and fishing traditions it has become a major player in the world’s oil economy. The capital, Kuwait City, offers a fine collection of Islamic art at the Tareq Rajab Museum while Sadu House presents an intriguing selection of Bedouin arts and crafts. To the east, Failaka Island contains Greek archaeological remains. Doha Village in Kuwait Bay boasts dhow-building yards, and further south Al Ahmadi provides an absorbing insight into the oil business at the Oil Display Centre. Kuwait’s five hostels are well located for exploring the highlights of this little giant of a country.Membership
